Phoenix Children's Hospital

After leaving work today I snapped some pictures of the new hospital going up. Once the hospital is complete we will be the largest children's hospital in the nation at over 500 beds... that is exciting.

9 Month Wellness Check Up

Today Aiyana turned 9 months old and what a crappy way to spend her nine month birthday... at her pediatrician's office for her nine month wellness check up. I debated on even taking her to the doctor because of the swine flu outbreak. I didn't want to unnecessarily expose her to anything that could be avoided. However, I decided it was best to keep up with her visits so I took her in with caution. I wouldn't let her touch anything in the clinic and everyone there was taking extra measures to sterilize everything and wash their hands. Thankfully Aiyana didn't need any vaccinations, but she did have to have her blood drawn to check for anemia which is standard at nine months. She was being such a big girl patiently waiting for them to find a vein. She let them hold her arm and watched as they pressed around on her veins to see if they could find a good one to poke at. They started with the left and she didn't cry a bit... just watched them struggle as they desperately tried to move the needle into the right spot. With no luck they proceeded to the right arm only to be disappointed yet again. Aiyana cried with the second poke, poor baby ;o(. They decided not to try anymore so we never got a blood sample.

Aiyana is in the 50% percentile for her height and weight; she is 27 inches and 19.5 lbs.

This is a picture of Aiyana at her 5 month appointment. Dr. Morales is her pediatrician. She was around the 80% percentile for height and weight when this picture was taken. Dr Morales told me that I must have high octane breast milk ;o)

I Got Out of the House

Yesterday my friend Jenny and I made our way over to a salsa tasting festival at Tempe Beach Park. It was a beautiful day to be outside despite the wind. We decided to take the light rail since neither of us had traveled on it before. It is a convenient way to travel without the hassle's of parking. During the festival we ate a lot of salsa and watched the band Champagne Tap rock out on stage; one of the guitar/vocalists from the band is a surgeon I work with at Phoenix Children's Hospital. We ran into my husband's brother, his girlfriend and one of husband's friends so we sat on the lawn with them for a while and watched all of the nutty drunks dancing in front of the stage. It was quickly decided that after all of the chips and salsa it would be best to grab more Mexican food so we met up with my hubby and the babe at Macayos in Tempe. It was a fun day and nice to get out with a good friend for some much needed girl time.

Hippo's Gonna Eat You!

So we bought Aiyana a new pool for the summer. I resisted buying her a large pool that I could fit in and opted for a fun, infant friendly pool with a sun shade. I found a really cute hippo pool that sprays water out of the front. The pool part is in, what appears to be, the bottom half of the hippos mouth so it looks like the hippo's mouth is wide open. Apparently Aiyana does not like her new pool. I had the pool sitting in the living room just after I put it together and Aiyana was sitting at the table. When she turned around and noticed the pool she acted startled and started crying. My poor baby, every time she turned around and looked at the pool she cried harder. Maybe she thought that the hippo was going to attack her? Anyway, I had to videotape her reaction. I couldn't record for very long because I had to comfort her and show her that the pool was not out to get her. So here it is...

My Idea of Good Exercise

Dana, Aiyana & I have found many wonderful jogging trails by our house and it has inspired me to continue exercising. Part of our journey leads us along a water canal where we typically encounter duck waddling along the water's edge. If we go west along the canal we are greeted by a beautiful horse, a horse ranch and plenty of shade; if we go east we can climb a hill and get an amazing view of the city. Our latest journey brought us east and I captured some of the striking views that we came across.

Aiyana's Take on Crawling

Aiyana has mastered the "army crawl" quite well. A whole new world has opened up to her in the last couple of weeks sicne she started scooting around. Her favorite things to find...

1.) The remote controls

2.) Our cell phones

3.) Shiloh's tail, ear or paw

4.) Door stoppers

She Said Dog

It is confirmed... She is a genius. I am pretty sure Aiyana said dog this morning. I kind of figured that the word dog would be her first word since she has known who the dog is for about a month now. Whenever I say "dog" or "Shi Shi" (our dogs name) she looks right at the dog. This morning I had Aiyana on the changing table and Shiloh ran up to her doorway. Aiyana turned her head to look at him, raised her eyebrows and said "dog". I was surprised, to say the least, because I wasn't expecting her to say any words this early (Aiyana is 8 months and 2 weeks). Like I usually do, I pointed to Shiloh and said "who's that?" Aiyana looked at me and said "dog" yet again. I couldn't believe it. She must have said it five times while looking at me and back at Shiloh. Again... I know this does not sanction her as a genius, but humor me.

Got the T-shirt to Prove It

Today, after general conference, I helped Dana go through his closet and organize everything. It was then that I saw just how many t-shirts my husband really has. Eighty five... eighty five t-shirts and maybe we missed some when we were counting because he was pulling t-shirts from everywhere. I suggested he should pick a couple from each color to consider for the trash or donation. I was knee deep in t-shirts trying to help Dana decipher which he would keep and which he would let go of when I noticed that the save pile was about 50 t-shirts tall and the donation pile was empty. I proceeded to coax Dana to just let go of a few when I realized that he was in the middle of counting his t-shirt stash. Holding a t-shirt in my hands I continued to fold. As I was folding yet another shirt I came across the logo Pulte. "Dana, what does Pulte mean?" The next thing I knew Dana was roaring in laughter so contagious I started laughing myself. I wasn't quite sure what we were laughing about, but I was laughing. I later found out that Pulte means nothing to him... It was a free t-shirt and that is why he kept it. So why were we laughing? I think the humor in it all was that Dana predicted I would ask about the name on that shirt and question why he was keeping it, but he also had the final t-shirt count in the back of his mind that he had yet to enlighten me on. You see, Dana is much like me in that I have a hard time letting go of things, but I am also a neat freak so I have to push beyond my urge to keep everything. I am trying to instill this attribute in my husband. In the end, we cleaned up his closet and it looks rather nice. I even persuaded him to let me color coordinate his shirts like I do in my closet. Mission accomplished... and might I add that Dana can probably say "Been there, done that and got the t-shirt to prove it" for just about everything he has done.

Bye Bye

Did I really see her do it? I think that Aiyana waved goodbye to Ms. Sheila at daycare. Sheila initiated a wave goodbye to Aiyana after handing her over to me. Aiyana had her arms around my neck and she let go with her left hand and waved it in the air, twisting her wrist back and forth. She did it like it was nothing, no big deal... just smiling and waving like she's been doing it for weeks now. She's a genius... I know, I know... they do learn things and waving goodbye at eight months old does not qualify Aiyana as a genius, but mom is very impressed.

Of course I like to capture everything on camera, but since I am not equipped with my camera everywhere I go I did not catch her Miss America worthy wave. So instead I will have to include a video of Aiyana discovering the drawers on the entertainment center. What will she get into next?

Swimsuit Edition

Today I am on a quest to find a swimming suit since all of my cute bikinis are now just a tangible garment from my past. I hope to find something bright and colorful for our upcoming and belated honeymoon. Dana and I decided that we are going to plan a trip to Kauai in May and I couldn't be more excited. We have both traveled a lot, but neither of us have traveled together; apart from our trips to northern Arizona and Iowa. This will be a much needed vacation for just the two of us.

Yard Update...

Last weekend we layed sod and I was so happy about it I was giddy. Over the week we noticed that some areas are turning brown already so Lowes kindly gave us fifty dollars worth of lawn maintenance products to fix it. Today we spread more grass seed and next week we will give the entire lawn a dose of ammonium sulfate to green it up. As soon as it is picture worthy I will include some pictures of our new backyard.
